Dr. Hassan Wario, Sports, Culture and the Arts Cabinet Secretary's Speech During the Official Launch of the IAAF World Under 18 Championships Nairobi 2017 Website At Kasarani Stadium

 Tuesday 28th February 2017

First and foremost I take this opportunity to sincerely thank Her Excellency First lady of the Republic of Kenya Mrs. Margaret Kenyatta and who is also the Patron of IAAF World Under 18 Champions Nairobi 2017 for taking time off her busy schedule to attend the launch of our official Website: worldunder18championshipnairobi2017.com

The launch of the site is an indication of the progress of both the Steering and Local organizing committees. As you are aware the event will host close to 2,000 youth from all over the world during the 5-day period.

Your Excellency, today our countdown is at 134 days to go. The website will be our platform of communication highlighting our level of preparedness, training of technical officials, recruitment of volunteers and our continuous relationships with our stakeholders.

Your Excellency this event is important to us in the calendar of athletic series in the world. Our previous participation in this event was in Cali Columbia in 2015. Where our country was no 2 with a medal standing of 13; 5 gold 4 silver 4 bronzes. Being the host it is our hope that as we host the 10th and final edition we will be no 1 and retain the IAAF World Under 18 flag.

This event aims at youth development and nurturing talents. As a Ministry our objective has always been the development of talent and infrastructure. These has all been achieved through the enactment of the sports act 2013 which saw the formation of various sports agencies in Kenya namely; sports Kenya, the National sports fund, the sports registrar and more recently the anti doping agency of Kenya.

Your Excellency, Sports is a multi billion shilling industry. The hosting of this event in July not only wills our youth to be part of a great championship but also showcase Kenya’s magnificent beauty as Africa’s Tourism and Trade hub. It is our hope that once the games are over the athletes will be able to visit the Maasai Mara and get to experience the seventh wonder of the world- “wildebeest migration”.

Finally Your Excellency My Ministry we will ensure that sports development amongst is the number one priority

Now it is my honor to invite Her Excellency first Lady Margaret Kenyatta to give her speech…
