Young athletes training at Machakos for the July 12-16 IAAF World Under 18 Championships are eagerly looking forward to earning slots in the national team. About 100 athletes are training in Machakos Teachers Training College under AK Southern chairman Joseph Ilovi and coach James Mutisya since last December.
Among the star athletes here is Kalekye Malika, who represented Kenya in 800m at the last World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombo. Although they train together, they reside in two camps for the boys and girls with modest facilities that are conducive for training for international competitions.
The Local Organising Committee team visited the camp on Thursday (Apr 27) and found the athletes pounding the murram track of Machakos TTC while relishing the prospects of representing Kenya at the global event. Nancy Nzisa, a renowned 5000m runner, is among the senior runners giving the youths tips at the camp. “They are so excited about the prospects of representing Kenya at the World Under 18 Championships,” Nzisa told the team that was led by Jonathan Kosgei.
Coaches informed the team that they have equipment like javelin, hammer and shot putt. They are expecting pole vault, high jump stands and landing gear. Other camps are spread across the country in Nyeri, Mt Elgon, Kisii, Nyakach, Keringet and Taita Taveta.
